INTRODUCTION:

Every year the health system spends hundreds of thousands of dollars treating pressure ulcers that can be prevented with a little basic quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers develop when excessive friction, prolonged pressure or a sheering force results in damage to skin and tissue. It commonly occurs in areas where forces are applied to an area where a thin covering of tissue overlies a bony prominence. When areas such as the heels, buttocks, hips, scapula and even the back of the head are placed under continuous compression, the resulting impedance of the lymphatic and circulatory system quickly leads to cellular damage and death.3 and all the resulting suffering placed on the patient, and the medical system can be prevented simply by keeping the Patient dry and ensuring a smooth rotation of potential pressure points, or providing dedicated pressure Management systems such as an air mattress or supportive pillows. Nursing staff can also perform pre-emptive planning and management of these patients using assessment tools such as the Water low Scale.4

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

A Non-experimental, Descriptive study design with survey approach was used. 300 Samples that is staff nurses working in the Selected Government Hospital in Gujarat state were selected by using non-probability purposive sample technique. A checklist to assess the Nursing care of the bedridden patient among staff nurses working in selected government Hospitals of Gujarat State. The questionnaires comprises of two sections. Section I consist Personal Information of Sample and Section II consists of Structured Checklist was used. The data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULT:

Result Revealed that Majority of samples (43.67%) were in age group of 41 and above and were female (88%), Majority of staff nurses had educational qualification up to G.N.M. (97%), Maximum number of the staff nurses (100%) did not attend this kind of in service education programme,. Majority 43.3% of the staff nurses were performing 0-25% of nursing procedures for bed ridden patients. Majority of the staff nurses (100%) practice nursing procedures like, care of dead, discharge care, biomedical waste management, recording and reporting. Majority of the staff nurses, patients relatives were performing Nursing procedures like cold application (99.6%) Ryle’s tube Feeding (99.3%), tepid sponge (99.3%), hot water bag (99.3%), personal hygiene (98.6%) and sitz bath (98.6%) for care of Bed ridden patient. CONCLUSION:

The staff nurses were well known about the importance of the basic care even though they were unable to perform the basic care of the bedridden patient due to shortage of the staff nurses, increase workload, establishment of the new department but no recruitment related to the new department. If any strategies are adopted by administrator to solve the issues the nurses can allot their duty hours to provide actual nursing care Required by bed ridden patient as per opinion of staff nurses.
